Why Is a Cholesterol Test Important?

Know Your Numbers: LDL-C Matters
Your LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) is often called “bad cholesterol” — and for good reason. When it's too high, it can build up in your arteries, making it harder for your heart to pump blood and increasing your risk of heart attack or stroke. Getting your LDL-C checked is a simple blood test that can save your life. Don’t wait — know your numbers, protect your heart.

Why is the Lipoprotein(a) Test Important?

Unlike other cholesterol levels that can be influenced by diet and lifestyle, Lp(a) is genetically inherited. That means:

  • You could have normal cholesterol levels and still have elevated Lp(a).

  • It does not change much over time, so testing once in your life may be enough.

  • High levels can triple your risk for heart attack, stroke, or aortic valve disease—even if you're otherwise healthy.

  • You should consider getting an Lp(a) test if:

    • You have a family history of early heart disease or stroke.

    • You've had a heart event at a young age with no other clear risk factors.

    • You are Black or of South Asian descent—groups shown to have higher rates of elevated Lp(a).

    • You want to understand your genetic risk and take preventive action early.

  • There’s currently no approved medication that specifically lowers Lp(a), but knowing your levels allows your doctor to:

    • Aggressively manage other risk factors (like blood pressure, diabetes, and LDL cholesterol).

    • Monitor you more closely for cardiovascular issues.

    • Consider new treatments as they become available (several are in development now).

Lp(a) is a silent risk.
Most people with elevated levels don’t know it—because they’ve never been tested.

The good news? You can now get tested for FREE through the Black Heart Association’s National Guard Your Heart program, powered by Amgen.

Knowing your numbers today could save your life tomorrow.
