The History of Seconds in Red

Seconds in Red was one of the very first events the Black Heart Association ever hosted. At the time, we did not yet understand the full weight of what it meant to ask women to stand with us in the fight against heart disease. We knew that women were often hurting, underserved, and unseen when it came to heart health, and that we could not do this work alone.

In Dallas, nearly 50 women gathered, not just for themselves, but for the sisters, daughters, wives, mothers, and aunts they loved. They showed up in red as a symbol of their faith. Belief in community. Belief in prevention. Belief that women deserved better care, better information, and a future with fewer losses.

Over time, Seconds in Red became more than an event. It became a statement.

Red is not just a color. It is the blood that beats through our hearts. It represents love, empathy, justice, beauty, and truth, not disease. While far too many women have lost their lives to heart disease, our prayer is the number decreases year after year because women continue to show up, speak up, and support the mission of the Black Heart Association.

Seconds in Red exists because women chose to care not only about their own hearts, but about the hearts of generations to come.

And because of you, lives are being changed
